It’s July 20th. We are two days removed from the 2018 All Star Game and we are 11 days away from the trade deadline. Two huge moves have already been made. Yesterday San Diego traded relievers Brad Hand and Adam Cimber to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for prospect Fransisco Mejia, a catcher who is a top prospect in the MLB.
Two days ago the Manny Machado saga finally came to a close which resulted in Manny heading to the Dodgers in exchange for 5 prospects. Have to give a round of applause for the best GM in baseball Brian Cashman on not budging and caving into the Orioles demands. It would have been nice to have Machado in pinstripes but he wouldn’t have solved our main problem. Our starting pitching.
As of right now we are rolling with a rotation of Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray, Domingo German and Masahiro Tanaka. So let’s dive into this rotation and see what we really have.
Luis Severino is our ace without a doubt. He has been absolutely phenomenal all season long and might even be in the running for the AL CY Young award. CC Sabathia has had a very good season for a pitcher his age. He doesn’t have the velocity he used to have 6-8 years ago but he has transformed his game and has become very serviceable as a number 3 or 4 pitcher for us. Masahiro Tanaka has only been off the DL for almost two weeks now so it’s hard to say how he’s been with such a small sample size. I think he will rebound quickly and be a solid number two for the remainder of the year. He will be a key component in our playoff run this year. If he performs like he did in the last postseason we will be in good shape. Sonny Gray. Yikes. I was ecstatic when Cashman pulled the trigger and made the trade for Gray. But his Yankees career so far has been one that makes you want to drink every time he steps on the mound. He is abysmal in the Bronx. Basically a loss every home game he pitches. Hopefully he can turn it around but it’s not looking good. Domingo German is another scary situation. He has a horrendous first inning majority of the time but rebounds but sometimes the deficit puts the team into a hole that they can’t seem to find a way out of. It’s possible we can see Justus Sheffield come up and take Germans place come September. Which I’m all for.
Lets say Sonny Gray isn’t the answer or management doesn’t think Sheffield is ready for the call up this season. Can we expect Cashman to work a trade for another starter? Absolutely. I trust Brian Cashman more than anyone else on this planet. So what are some possible trade scenarios we might see?
Carlos Martinez – St. Louis Cardinals
Martinez wouldn’t be a bad get at all. He’s a hard thrower with a fastball that can peak around 97-98 mph. He would be a good option as a number 3 come September and you can throw Sonny Gray out as the number 5. It isn’t a guarantee that Martinez is on the block but I wouldn’t mind if Cashman kicked the tires on this. He would honestly be my top choice.
Michael Fulmer – Detroit Tigers
Michael Fulmer former Mets prospect turned into a potential stud starter for the Tigers. It’s pretty evident that the Detroit Tigers franchise is in serious need of some help. They have Miguel Cabrera declining more and more. Traded Verlander at the deadline last year. They just don’t have anything going for them. If you throw together a good package of prospects. Especially with the deep prospect pool the Yankees have. I don’t see why this can’t be a realistic option for the Yankees.
Jacob deGrom – New York Mets
Its a long shot. A very very long shot but I have hope. With the prospects the Yankees have I can’t see anyone putting a better package together. But would the Mets trade an All Star pitcher to their big brothers. It would better their franchise in the long term but knowing them they will hold on to deGrom and let him suffer as he continues to have the best year of his career. The man has an ERA under 2. A 1.68 era to be exact and he is 5-4. 5 wins. That’s it. The man barely lets up runs. It’s just that the Mets are soooo bad. I just don’t see it happening as much as I want it to. But time will tell.
I honestly think if the Yankees don’t make a trade for a starter come the deadline they won’t have enough to make it over the hill. It’s clear the Astros have the best rotation in the American League. Verlander, Cole, Keuchel, Morton, McCullers. I mean it’s not even fair. I’d put Cleveland at number two and them adding Hand into the bullpen to go along with Andrew Miller makes them even scarier come the postseason. Red Sox have Sale and Davey Tingle Fingers. Sale just abuses us every time we face him so I’ve lost hope of ever knocking him around. I trust Cashman. If there’s a deal in place and it makes sense and betters the team I fully support it. Lead us to the promiseland Cash and let us get number 28.
