Yankees Roll Through Royals Despite Injuries

The Yankees are back in the win column but at what cost? We hold our heads in silence as news just broke that Aaron Judge has a chip fracture in his right wrist due to being hit by a pitch in the very first inning of tonight’s game. Fuck me sideways… Judge can’t swing a bat in a game situation for at least three weeks, which basically means he’s going to be out for a month. First Sanchez. Now Judge. This is shaping up to be a very rough August. I mean I don’t think anyone even cared about the game once word spread that Judge was headed to the hospital for an MRI. Fans even held a “candlelight” vigil as you can see here. Sonny Gray also left the game early tonight as well. Gray was having one of his best starts in Yankee Stadium. Cruising along pitching shutout baseball. Until he was hit with a comebacker in his throwing hand in the fifth inning. But let’s stop talking about the negative shit that happened and recap this lovely win instead.

The Yankees scored early in the contest, the first inning to be exact. After a phenomenal display by Sonny Gray in the top half of the inning the Yankees gave Gray some run support. It all started with Judge getting hit on the wrist from Royals starter Jakob Junis. Judge winced and trotted to first and seemed okay despite being in pain. WRONG! The hit by pitch was followed by a Gregorius double to right field. Judge would score on a Stanton sac fly. Sac fly most underrated thing in baseball. Just saying. Didi would also advance to third on the sacrifice. Hicks would walk and Didi would end up scoring on a fielders choice by Gleyber Torres. 2-0 after the first and things are looking good.

Judge batted again in the third and reached on an infield single. Everything seems fine still. WRONG! Onto the fourth inning though where the Yankees poured it on the Royals and exploded for some more runs. Neil Walker would single with one out and would score after Austin Romine doubled to center field. Gardner followed up the double with a groundout. Up next Aaron Judge. WRONG!! Miguel Andujar would come in to pinch hit for Judge and everyone in Yankee Stadium let out a simultaneous “Oh shit!” Andujar would hit a grounder to short but ended up being safe on a throwing error. Inning should have been over and due to mistake by Adalberto Mondesi, Didi Gregorius made the Royals pay. First pitch of the at bat Didi absolutely mashed a changeup to right for a three run ding dong. His 18th homer of the season. 6-0 Yankees. Bird would end the Yankees scoring for the game with a sac fly in the bottom of the 5th scoring Aaron Hicks.

Gray would not come out to start the 6th inning so in comes Adam Warren from the pen. Things were rocky for Warren as he let up a lead off double to Moustakas and followed it by a two run blast to Sal Perez. Shutout over. Thanks Warren. But he would settle down to get out of the inning. 7-2 after 6 innings of play and the Yankees seem like they are in good shape to win the ball game. Zach Britton who was acquired from the Orioles earlier in the week game out to pitch the 8th and make his awaited pinstripe debut. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning and even notched a strikeout. Courtesy of Sal Perez going down looking like a bitchhhh. Shreve would come out for the ninth and surprisingly enough he didn’t let up a run. So that’s good and everything. Yankees end up winning by the final score of 7-2 and finally beating up on a team that’s in the mix of shit at the bottom of the leagues standings.

So what can we expect with Judge being out? I mean realistically it’s going to be tough. He’s most likely not returning til the end of August the earliest. 3 weeks of not swinging a bat, figure he’ll have a couple rehab starts in AAA. Kinda sucks that Clint Frazier is suffering from concussion symptoms because I would love to see him play full time for a month. But odds are Aaron Hicks will be starting in right in Judges place. I’m expecting Stanton to step up big time. Luckily we have one of the easiest schedules in baseball in the second half so Judges absence shouldn’t make or break this team heading into the stretch. It’s going to make this tougher for sure but I think we are still in good shape to make some noise. We just need other guys to step up. I’m looking at you Didi and Bird. This is your time. But with bats like Torres, Andujar, Stanton, Hicks and even some timely hits by Gardner. We’ll be alright until Judge and Sanchez returns. So Lets go Yankees!!
