Winter Meetings: New York Yankees

As of yesterday the MLB Winter Meetings have officially begun in lovely Las Vegas. A lot of big names have been involved in trade rumors such as Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer, J.T. Realmuto, Madison Bumgarner and quite possibly Noah Syndergaard. There is also a big name free agent by the name of Bryce Harper who is expected to meet with teams. I mean after all Las Vegas is his backyard. Could we finally get a slight clue as to where Harper is going to land? Possibly.

The New York Yankees have made some splashes in the free agent and trade market leading up to these meetings. They went out and traded for starting pitcher James Paxton from the Seattle Mariners. A huge get for the Yankees. I’m slightly disappointed for giving up Justus Sheffield but who really knows if he’s going to have what it takes to be an impactful big league pitcher. Paxton definitely improves the starting rotation. But by all means he’s not enough to put this team over but acquiring him is a step in the right direction.

As of today you’d assume the starting rotation would be Sevy, Tanaka, Paxton, Montgomery if healthy and CC. Sevy who struggled the whole second half last year is someone you can’t rely on at the moment during a big game. Tanaka also struggles with being inconsistent, Paxton could be coming in to be a solid number two for the Yankees. CC is just a guy who’s going to come out and throw four or five innings and be a veteran voice in the clubhouse. Montgomery might not even be here come April. So what’s the plan?

Corey Kluber

Kluber’s name has been toss around more and more the last two weeks. Kluber who is a certified ace would be the guy I’d pull the trigger on in a heartbeat. Rumors have been swirling that the Indians are asking for Yankees OF prospect Estevan Florial. As good as he may be, if they want him as the centerpiece you do it. End of story. You don’t lose out on a top pitcher for a guy who might not get called up for another two years. With an outfield stacked with guys like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Brett Gardner, a healthy Clint Frazier, what would be the reasoning for not completing this deal at all costs?

Trevor Bauer

Lets say you want to go cheaper and keep the farm intact this is the move you would assume Cashman would go for. Trevor Bauer has been very solid for Cleveland over the last three years. He could come in and take Montgomery’s spot and if Severino rebounds from his horrific second half of this season you could have a pretty nice rotation. But if you resign JA Happ this move doesn’t happen. If Happ signs elsewhere this is a highly likely option for the Yankees.

Madison Bumgarner

An aging clutch playoff pitcher. This seems like somebody who would be on Brian Cashmans radar if it was still 2010. Would I kick the tires on him? Yes. Would I give up a haul like the Yankees gave up for Paxton or even what the Indians are asking for Kluber? Nah, I’m good on that. MadBum has been battling injuries ever the last couple of seasons and seems like a guy who is starting to decline. I would much rather have Kluber, Bauer or Happ instead of throwing away prospects to get MadBum who was out of his mind 5 years ago. Here’s to hoping that Cashman doesn’t go back to his old ways.

Bryce Harper

There is such a strange gut feeling I have that the Yankees will be signing Bryce Harper to a big time contract. Would it make sense? No. Would I be mad? No. Harper would crush 50 homeruns into the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium . And if the rumors are true that he’s open to playing first base, you trade Greg Bird in a package for a pitcher and you either have Luke Voit DH or come off the bench as a power bat. It would be such a Yankee move to sign Harper and it would bring back the Evil Empire this team once was during the late 90s. Although reports have come out that the Yankees are not looking into signing Bryce Harper, I just can’t take that seriously. You don’t pass up on a generational talent like him especially after the Red Sox just pushed your shit in all season and won the World Series. It would be such a power move and it’s going to happen. See you on River Ave Bryce!

Manny Machado

I feel like it’s almost inevitable that the Yankees are going to sign Manny Machado. I also believe that they are serious about not wanting to sign him to a 300 million dollar contract also. With the news that Didi Gregorius will miss half of the 2019 season it just makes sense that the Machado is the main target for the Yankees. You slide him in to play short until Didi is good to go and then unfortunately you trade Miguel Andujar away and move Manny to third. I can also see Andujar getting moved before Machado gets signed and if that happens you better believe Manny Machado will be wearing pinstripes come April.

Cashman has the money, has the prospects and has the brains to absolutely kill it this winter. I hope he makes the right moves. Could you imagine how much the Yankees will be hated next season if he goes out and gets Harper, Machado and Kluber? I would drink the tears of Mets and Red Sox fans across the globe. I know I’m being greedy but I honestly don’t give a shit anymore. Lets go all in with the narrative that we buy our championships and do it next year. The thought of these potential free agents signings and trades have me so pumped up for the 2019 season, I’m ready to run through a wall. Knock it out of the park Cashman and as always Lets Go Yankees!
