Nothing makes me happier than a jubilant Henrik Lundqvist and after he secured his win in the Save Streak competition tonight at the All Star Skills competition in San Jose, he was very happy. Probably the happiest he’s been in years. Which makes me kind of sad in a way but when Hank succeeds it’s a cause for celebration especially when you know he is on the back end of his career.
Hank beat out Devan Dubnyk (MIN), Marc-Andre Fleury (VGS), John Gibson (ANH), Braden “Neckbeard” Holtby (WAS), Jimmy Howard (DET), Pekka Rinne (NSH) and Andrei Vasilevskiy (TBL) to secure the crown and he did so by putting on a spectacular show. The Save Streak competition is essentially a shootout competition to see how many the goalies can stop. Lundqvist was matched up against shooters from the Atlantic Division. Not that easy but Hank did Hank things.
Hank was the last goalie to go and at that point Vasilevskiy was in the lead with 8 saves in a row. Hank stopped 7 out of his first 9 shots then went on an absolute tear! Hank saved 12 shots in a row before letting up a goal to Jeff Skinner, who always seems to find a way to score against Lundqvist. Nobody likes you Jeff. Hank had some help from the posts a couple times but he made some nice saves on people like Nikita Kucherov and John Tavares. He did his patented Hank celebration and got a very nice ovation. He just had to show the NHL that he may be 36 but he still has got a lot left in the tank. Thank you for repping the Rangers and giving us something to cheer for this weekend, we appreciate you Hank!
