Brooms Down.. Yankees Drop Final Game Of Series To Red Sox 8-5

Alright everyone, let’s put the brooms away. We don’t need them tonight. Unfortunately we couldn’t sweep the hated Boston Red Sox tonight. We still won the series, our ninth series win in a row this season but regardless of that tonight’s 8-5 loss was a disappointing one for multiple reasons.

We can start off with the fact that David Price, the guy who has nightmares.. no, not even nightmares but night terrors about pitching on the mound in Yankee Stadium.. finally got the monkey off his back and pitched a great game. All good things have to come to an end. He went 6 1/3 innings with 6 K’s and only let up two runs. In comparison to his usual 3 innings pitched and allowing upward of 28 runs. Hats off to him for finally living up to the money he is making. Shoutout to Boston for biting that bullet because I am beyond happy he is not wearing a Yankees uniform.

CC Sabathia came off the IL just in time to start tonight’s game. He had moments of being very solid and he also had moments of being hard to watch. Don’t get me wrong, I love the big man but this has gone on long enough. This guy helped us win a championship and I am forever grateful for that. He’s been a workhorse for us but man it’s been rough lately. He can barely hit 89 MPH on the gun as of late and when he does the pitch gets cranked out of the ballpark. I’m not trying to drag CC so please don’t start with that narrative. I just don’t want to sit around and get into an offensive battle on days when he takes the mound. He’s good for 5-6 innings tops. He let up a bomb to JD Martinez tonight in the first inning tonight. Gave up a string of base hits that resulted in another run in the second inning. Then he let up an absolute moon shot to Xander Boegarts in the third.

As for Xander Boegarts, fuck that guy. He has been absolute monster the last three games against us and I am beyond happy this series is over so I don’t have to watch him hit the piss out of the baseball against anymore for a couple of weeks.

So with the Red Sox up 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Yankees finally got to David who was perfect through his first three innings. Luke Voit absolutely crushed a ball to left center for a 436 foot solo homer. He hit the life out of the ball and from that swing it kind of felt like the momentum was going to swing in our favor. Price seemed somewhat rattled on the mound.

The Yankees would follow up Voit’s homerun with a string of singles to load the bases. This is it. All systems go. Destroy David Price. Gio Urshela would deliver a sac fly to centerfield and now it’s a one run game with runners on the corners and two outs. Clint Frazier would step up to the plate but wouldn’t even get to finish his at bat. On a 2-1 pitch that was a high fastball, the Yankees sent Gleyber Torres to try and steal second. The caught him in a rundown and in the process they also sent Aaron Hicks from third to try and steal home to sneak in the tying run. After a quick back and forth, Hicks was tagged out at home to end the inning. Just like that, rally dead. Hopes and dreams, dead. Wasn’t the brightest play call especially given the fact we had Price very vulnerable. It was ruined and that was the closest the Yankees would get to tying this game up.

The moment this game exploded open. The 7th inning. A god damn debacle to say the least. CC Sabathia came out of the game and insert Luis Cessa. Cessa gave up a lead off walk and then got the next batter to ground into a fielders choice. Not bad. One out, one runner on. Eduardo Nunez would bloop a ball into right field and this is where the wheels feel the fuck off this game. The bouncing ball skipped right past Frazier and to the wall. Not great. The runner would score all the way from first and a horrible throw by Frazier resulted in Nunez making it to third base. 4-2 Red Sox. The Yankees had the infield play in for the next batter hoping to prevent another run from scoring on groundball. Guess what? It didn’t work. Holt popped a ball over LeMahieu’s head for an RBI single. 5-2 Red Sox. Betts would pop up after for the second out of the inning. Next up Benintendi. He would line a ball into right where Frazier tried to make up for his defensive blunder earlier decided to dive for the ball. Plot twist, he missed it. Holt scored and Benintendi moved to second. 6-2 Red Sox. What the fuck. The Yankees would get out of this nightmare inning after a JD Martinez groundout but the damage was done. Thank you Clint.

Not to worry though. Clint Frazier’s disastrous fielding would strike yet again in the very next inning. A lead off double by Yankee killer Xander Boegarts was followed by an RBI single by Rafael Devers. 7-2 Red Sox, I hate life. That would end Cessa’s night. Insert David Hale for the Yankees. He would get Vazquez to ground out to the catcher, moving Devers to second in the process. Michael Chavis hit a lazy fly ball close to the right field line. Guess who misplayed it? Clint Frazier. The ball ended up getting by him and resulted in an RBI triple for Chavis. 8-2 Red Sox, put me out of my misery. Please and thank you.

The Yankees rallied for a bit in the bottom of the eighth but the rally would come up short. Matt Barnes came in to pitch the eighth for Boston. He let up a lead off single to DJ and with the rain picking up in the Bronx he couldn’t find his control and walked Voit and Sanchez back to back to load the bases. With the weather clearly in his head, the nightmare inning continued for Barnes as he balked in LeMahieu making it an 8-3 game. Hicks hit a groundball to first which hit the bag and resulted in an out but Voit was able to score on the play. 8-4 but the Yankees are threatening. Torres just missed a 2-1 curveball hitting it deep to right. It was deep enough to score Sanchez on sac fly and that would be the last runner the Yankees would have to cross home for the remainder of the game.

8-5 Red Sox is your final. Tough loss. A lot of things went wrong but we are still 8.5 games up on the Sox and we still hold the top spot in the AL East. We’ll move past this and look forward to our upcoming series against Toronto and hopefully we get some news on the Dallas Keuchel front sometime tonight. As for Clint Frazier…. please work on your fielding because after this game you’re making it harder and harder to defend you to these irrational fans.
