Yankees Blow Lead, Take Lead, Blow Lead Again Only To Win In Extras Against Indians 7-6

Yesterdays afternoon game was nothing short of a rollercoaster for the New York Yankees. This team has been trending downward ever since the calendar turned from May to June. Losing 5 out of their last 6 games heading into the final game of the series against the Indians, this team was desperate for a win. It was shaky but they did pull it off.

The Yankees wasted no time in putting up some runs against Cleveland starter Shane Bieber. No relation to Justin Bieber. Trust me… I googled it. Bieber struck out the side to start the game for the Indians and then retired the first two batters to start the second inning. But he hit a snag. Clint Frazier, who has been swinging a hot bat after his debacle in right field at Yankee Stadium, was able to score a single off of Bieber. This was followed up by an absolute bomb by Brett Gardner. He hit the baseball harder than his helmet hit his face the day prior. Absolutely crushed.

2-0 Yankees and the wheels fell off for Shane. Gio Urshela would work a walk that was follow by an infield single that Cameron Maybin was able to beat out. DJ LeMahieu continued the trend with an RBI single to center that scored Gio from second. 3-0 Yankees. Aaron Hicks was walked to load the bases but that didn’t last long before the man with the biggest biceps in baseball, Luke Voit, crushed a double into the gap that would score Maybin and LeMahieu. 5-0 Yankees and Bieber gets the hook.

The Yankees went with the newest dumb fad in baseball to start today’s the game, the opener. I literally hate that this is a thing but whatever I guess. Chad Green got the start and pitched two scoreless innings. Nestor Cortes Jr. followed that up with three scoreless innings of his own and he was flawless. No hits, no walks. Beautifully done by Cortes Jr. Boone opted to take him out before the sixth inning and gave the ball to Tommy Kahnle… that was a mistake.

This is when the game started getting ugly and giving everybody stomach pains. A 5-0 lead evaporated before our eyes and Kahnle had an absolute nightmare inning.  Leonys Martin led off the inning with a solo shot. 5-1 Yankees. Here we go. Down the drain.  The Indians plated another run thanks to a Carlos Santana RBI single. 5-2 Yankees. The real gut shot that made me feel like a shit covered asshole was the Mike Freeman two run homer that turned this game into a run one game and made my heart hurt. 5-4 Yankees after six innings. Not great Kahnle. Not great at all.

The Yankees trotted out Adam Ottavino for the seventh inning and as of late he has been lights out. And of course, this game was the one he made a mistake. Behind in the count to Jake Bauers 3-0, the Indians gave Bauers the green light and of course it was fastball down the pipe that he didn’t miss. Put the ball in orbit, took the wind out of every Yankees fan sails and gave the Indians a shit ton of momentum. 5-5 and it’s all tied up after seven.

The Yankees made a surge in the ninth inning to try and win the game. A one out single by Voit was followed up with a huge double by Gary Sanchez. Can’t believe people wanted to trade this guy.. The Indians intentionally walked Gleyber Torres to try and get a double play to avoid giving up the go ahead run. Clint Frazier had a perfect at bat and did exactly what he needed to do. Textbook situational hitting by Clint. He was able to work the count and deliver a deep fly ball to center that gave Voit plenty of time to tag up and score the go ahead run. 6-5 Yankees, bring in Chapman.

Aroldis Chapman is a weird guy to watch pitch. It’s either he’s lights out or he gives you a heart attack. Today he opted for the heart attack. A lead off single for by Jose Ramirez started it off the Indians. Chapman attempted to pick him off at first but he chucked the ball up the foul line allowing Ramirez to move to second. Fucking shit. Roberto Perez worked a walk so the Indians are staring at two men on with no outs in a one run game. Jake Bauers had one of the worst bunt attempts ever and lined the ball right into Voits glove. One away. Kevin Plawecki came in to pitch hit and cranked a ball to left field but he didn’t get all of it. Two outs and Jose Ramirez opted not to tag up to my surprise. Francisco Lindor followed it up with a ground ball to short. Old reliable Didi Gregorius was there BUT he booted it and the ball rolled all the way into foul territory behind third base allowing Jose Ramirez to score the tying run, 6-6. The last person you expected to boot a ball. Maybe the Yankees were just destined to lose this game and get swept. Who knows.. Chapman battled back and got out of the inning. Free baseball in Cleveland.

The Yankees made quick work in the tenth. Maybin hit a one our double off the wall in center and the Yankees were looking to get him home at all costs. LeMahieu would groundout moving Maybin to third but Aaron Hicks said don’t worry boys I got this. He would deliver a double into left center that would score Maybin from third with no issue at all. 7-6 Yankees and that would be your final score as Steven Tarpley closed it down in the bottom of the tenth by striking out the side. Tarpley looked really good. Thank god the Yankees held on and won this game. It would have been a tough loss. Yankees go on to face their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets in a two game series. Hopefully the build off this win and turn this month around.
