Did Jeff Gorton Just Fleece The Winnipeg Jets For Jacob Trouba? Yes. Yes He Did.

Last night, around 8 PM, while me and the guys were recording our newest episode of our podcast (Stop The Nonsense) we got the alert that the New York Rangers traded for defenseman Jacob Trouba. Holy shit. Literally out of nowhere, Jeff Gorton coming from the shadows on a Monday night to put some smiles on Rangers fans faces. He must have been taking tips from the Yankees Brian Cashman, striking when people least expect. It took our episode off the rails for a couple of minutes but we recovered and kept our emotions in check.

We then learned the details of the trade. Many people including experts around the league assumed it would cost a fortune for a team to acquire Trouba. The lie detector test determined that was a lie! This sly bastard JG traded Winnipeg back their own first round pick that they traded away for Kevin Hayes and tossed in Neal Pionk in exchange for one Jacob Trouba. That was it. That was the trade. It went from rumors of a 1st round pick, maybe Lias Andersson and possibly even Pavel Buchnevich. But nope, just Pionk and a first. What a move.

Absolute fleece job by Jeff Gorton! Makes it even funnier that the Jets traded Hayes’ rights to Philly for only a fifth round pick. Basically we traded Kevin Hayes and Neal Pionk for Jacob Trouba and Brendan Lemieux. That’s pretty fucking absurd if you ask me.

So what exactly are the Rangers getting in a player like Jacob Trouba?

Trouba, who is only 25 and just reaching his ceiling as a player in the NHL could be everything the Rangers wanted when they originally signed Kevin Shattenkirk. A right handed shot who can put up big time points on the powerplay. He amassed 50 points last season with 8 goals and 42 assists. 18 of his 50 points came on the powerplay last year (3 G, 15 A) This is the kind of guy the Rangers needed, not Erik Karlsson. I would like to sincerely thank the San Jose Sharks for giving EK65 that ludicrous contract yesterday. They seriously saved the Rangers from shooting themselves in the foot yet again. I love Karlsson but he was ankle injury away from never being able to lace up his skates again.

One thing to note about Trouba is his status as an RFA. He is technically a free agent come July 1st but I can see the Rangers signing him before it even gets to that point. Do I see the Rangers locking him up long term? Absolutely. This is a player that helps you in a rebuild. Still young, still has a lot of quality years of play left in him. The Rangers didn’t go out to trade for this guy just to flip him at the draft this year. I firmly believe that. And if they do I will admit I’m wrong and I’d probably crawl into a ball of depression as well.

The Rangers rebuild may be over before we knew it. John Davidson is at the helm. Gorton isn’t making Sather sized mistakes in free agency or in the trade department. We are picking Kaapo Kakko with the #2 pick Friday night. Artemi Panarin could be a Ranger next month. Things are looking good for the Blueshirts. I just have my fingers crossed that we can get this thing done before Hank hangs up the pads. I need to see that beautiful Swedish man hoist that Cup over his head before he retires. I need it more than anything.

In the mean time, enjoy these pictures of Brady Skjei and Jacob Trouba’s bromance. Happy these two already have a solid connection, hopefully it transitions onto the ice as well.
