There you have it folks. Kaapo Kakko, the 18 year old Finnish winger is officially the newest member of the New York Rangers. In a shocking turn of events, the Rangers didn’t go off the board, they didn’t take the Hugh Jessiman route, they didn’t reach on somebody like Lias Andersson, they took the guy who they were destined to take the entire time.
Going into this draft everyone was well aware that the top two picks were going to be Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko. Who was going to go #1 was a toss up still heading into draft night. With all the ties Hughes has with Devils organization, the rumors swirling that the Devils were 100% going to take Hughes. I was still nervous. Nervous the Rangers were going to cuck themselves out of a franchise altering star. But those days are in the past. Jeff Gorton has the reigns and he is hitting nothing less than a homerun every time he steps into the box.
The Rangers haven’t had a player of Kakko’s caliber in a very, very long time. He’s a lethal scoring threat every time he touches the puck, he has unbelievable skating skills, he’s a decent size, standing at 6’2″ and weighing 192 pounds. He’s already the player everyone thought Chris Kreider was going to develop into. Side note: Chris Kreider never developed into that player. Still waiting on the 30 goal season. But we don’t have to talk about that.
Kakko played a full season in the Liiga league this past year against grown fucking men. 45 games. 22 goals. 16 assists. In the World’s this year in 10 games, he mounted 6 goals and 1 assist against NHLers. This kid is beyond ready. They even showed a graphic when he was drafted and it said Improvements: none. I will call it right now. Kaapo Kakko is winning the Calder trophy next season. You heard it here first.
With the Rangers in rebuild mode, this pick was crucial. The Rangers have had 6 first round picks in the last 3 drafts. 2017 – Lias Andersson, Filip Chytil. 2018 – Vitali Kratsov, K’Andre Miller and Nils Lundkvist. And now in 2019 – Kaapo Kakko. The future is beyond bright in Rangerstown and I am beyond ready for October to come.
Let’s enjoy this time as Rangers fans, good things are coming, one of those things is Artemi Panarin. Until then though, let’s enjoy these Kaapo Kakko highlights until we get to watch him 82+ games a year for the next 10+ years.
