Today marks the day of a new era for New York Rangers hockey. I mean this is huge news for a bland Monday morning. The Rangers have officially recalled goalie Igor Shesterkin up from the AHL. The heir to the throne.
Shesterkin was originally drafted by the Rangers in the 2014 NHL draft in the 4th round. Since draft day, Igor has been making an impact overseas in the KHL playing for SKA Saint Petersburg. Over the least three seasons with Saint Petersburg, Igor compiled a record of 71-12-10 in 95 games. Over the course of those 95 games he maintained a save % of .941. I would consider that very good but what do I know?
Shesterkin finally made the jump to play in the US this season. During his stint with the Hartford Wolfpack, Shesterkin put together a 15-4-3 record with a Save % of .932. Safe to say that he took no time in adjusting to playing an American ice.
With Igor getting the call up, the Ranger reiterated that there was going to be no follow up moves. So for the time being the Rangers are rostering three goalies. Hank, Georgiev and now Igor. Interesting game plan but to me this means one thing and one thing only. Georgiev is being shipped off before the trade deadline.
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Benoit Allaire is a wizard when it comes to developing goalie talent. He developed Cam Talbot and Antii Raanta into serviceable starters in the league, Hank is arguably one of the best goalies of all time and now it’s his turn to mold Shesterkin into the next maniac between the pipes for the Rangers for the next decade or two. All I know is I’m excited and there is rumblings we can see Igor as early as tomorrow as the Rangers face-off against the Colorado Avalanche. Nothing like tossing the kid straight into the fire for his first NHL game.
The future is here and it’s just getting brighter by the day at this point for the Rangers. With faces like Panarin, Mika, Kakko, Adam Fox, DeAngelo, K’Andre Miller still in college and now we get our first look at Igor Shesterkin in Rangers blue. This is quite the time to be a Rangers fan and I am very excited.
